Washington, D.C. —Today, President Biden announced that he has decided to step down from the presidential race.
Aissa Canchola Bañez, Political Director of Protect Borrowers Action, issued the following statement:
“No American President has fought harder for student loan borrowers than President Joe Biden. From cancelling more than $168 billion in student loan debt for nearly 5 million Americans to fighting back against right-wing politicians using the courts to push millions of borrowers and their families further into the red, President Biden has been steadfast and unapologetic in his efforts to tackle the student debt crisis head on.
“Vice President Harris is a champion who fights for borrowers and will continue to deliver on debt relief. She understands student debt as the economic, racial, and gender justice issue that it is. Her track record speaks for itself—closing down shady for-profit colleges that abused students and left them in debt, while Donald Trump ran a failed for profit college profiteering off of students’ hopes and dreams.
“As borrowers continue to face attacks by right-wing politicians—including through the extreme agenda laid out in Project 2025—and as Republicans promise to reverse life-changing debt relief, the stakes in this election couldn’t be higher.”
