As Right-Wing Politicians Promise to Keep Borrowers and Their Families Drowning in Student Debt, Biden Administration Announces $1.2 Billion in Debt Relief for 35,000 Public Service Workers
WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today, the Biden-Harris Administration announced the approval of $1.2 billion in additional student loan debt relief for 35,000 student loan borrowers working in public service—including educators, nurses, and first responders. With today’s announcement, more than 4.7 million Americans have benefitted from $168.5 billion in life-changing student loan debt relief.
Aissa Canchola Bañez, Political Director of Protect Borrowers Action, issued the following statement:
“As Donald Trump and his right-wing allies continue to promote their extreme Project 2025 manifesto—promising to reverse student loan debt relief and force Americans with student debt to pay more on their monthly student loan bills, President Biden is continuing to deliver life-changing relief to thousands of Americans working to educate our children and keep our communities safe and healthy.
“In one day alone, President Biden freed more than 35,000 educators, healthcare workers, police officers, and other first responders from the crushing weight of the student debt crisis—5 times the number of workers that were ever able to benefit from the program before he took office. We will never forget that under the Trump/DeVos Department of Education, 99% of these public servants were robbed of relief they were entitled to.
“Today 1-in-10 borrowers have benefitted from life changing student debt relief and have the necessary economic breathing room to provide for their families, save to buy a home, and contribute to their local economy. We applaud the Biden-Harris Administration for continuing to fight for hardworking Americans and their families.”
