Advocates Applaud Biden-Harris Administration Progress Approving Student Debt Relief for 1 Million Public Service Workers
President Biden and Vice President Harris Make History Fixing PSLF Program and Ensuring Public Service Workers Access Relief They Are Entitled To Under the Law
Washington, D.C. — Today, the Biden-Harris Administration announced the approval of $4.5 billion in additional student loan debt relief for more than 60,000 student loan borrowers working in public service—including educators, nurses, social workers, servicemembers, and first responders. With today’s announcement, the Biden-Harris Administration makes history approving more than $74 billion in debt relief for more than 1 million public service workers under PSLF—the most enacted relief in the history of the bipartisan program’s existence.
In total, the Biden-Harris Administration has approved more than $175 billion in student loan debt relief for more than 4.8 million Americans. Today’s historic announcement comes as the Biden-Harris Administration continues to fight partisan attacks from MAGA Attorneys General seeking to block debt relief and prevent borrowers from accessing more affordable repayment options.
Aissa Canchola Bañez, Political Director of Protect Borrowers Action, issued the following statement:
“As Donald Trump and his MAGA co-conspirators continue their cruel and relentless attacks on working families with student debt, President Biden and Vice President Harris are making history approving $74 billion in debt relief for more than 1 million dedicated teachers, healthcare workers, servicemembers, and other public service workers under the Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program.
“We will never forget that under the Trump/DeVos Department of Education, 99% of these workers were robbed of relief they were entitled to. If Donald Trump is able to enact Project 2025, they will once again take aim at this critical program.
“We applaud the Biden-Harris Administration for their tireless work to fix the PSLF program and make this life-changing debt relief a reality for hardworking borrowers and their families.”
